Deployment

The scenario was tweaked pitched battle, with the central hill worth +2 BP and the other hills worth +1 BP. Also, units on the central hill didn't count as being in any table quarter for claiming table quarters. Additionally all hills counted as large targets for drawing LOS through them.

Dark elves deployed the level 4 in the long xbow line, the level 2 in the spears, a death hag in the witch elf block, and the other death hag (the general) with her cauldron. Assassins are hidden in the witch elves and the shades. Ogres formed the mini-star with tyrant and butcher joining the big bulls, and the other butcher joined the guneaters for some extra firepower. And of course the wyrdstone necklace put a wound on the tyrant.

Turn 1 - Tribe Farcrag

Ogres push forward, hunter passes stupidity (and does every turn), trappers weren't doing anything but grabbing that hill late game so bicker didn't matter. Magic put trollguts on the bull-star and the leadbelchers, and 2 bonecrunchers + bangstick killed 1 of the xbow elves that the level 4 was hanging out in. D realized at this point that I was going to put everything into that unit ... The guneaters unloaded and dropped a couple more elves there, but no panic test required yet. Hunter took his first snipe of the game: 4+ to tag the death hag in the witch block, she failed her Look Out Sir! save, was easily wounded ... and took 1 wound on the D3.

Turn 1 - Softy Khainite Dark Elves

Dark elves mobilized to mess with the ogres, either marchblocking & screening with harpies or denying bull charge with the witch elves. Magic had real potential with 8 + 4 power dice with the black staff, but turned out ok for the fatties. The level 4's WS missile spell was dispelled, soul stealer was let go (he was clearly out of range of the 4 ironguts), and he miscast on the basic magic missile, taking a wound in the process. The level 2 killed a bull from the 3 bull unit. Shooting put some wounds on both units of ironguts, but no dead fatties. The slave giant was also hammered by the right xbows and took 4 wounds, but was apparently within short range (read: charge range) of the corner of the unit! He forgot to buff with the cauldron, but would remember from here on out.

Turn 2 - Tribe Farcrag

D had set up crossfires with his harpies, so my belchers and hunter shoved the birdwomen and he learned how to better use the ladies ... The bull-star charged the witches, the right ironguts the shades, and the slave giant the xbows on the hill - who passed terror and put another wound on the big guy on the way in. Magic put trollguts on the guneaters + butcher, and bangstick reduced the level 4's xbows to 3 + him. Shooting from the guneaters pounded the unit, and randomized the two shots onto the level 4 that I needed to take him out. Another two shots killed elves, and the last man broke and ran.

In the main combat the tyrant challenged and was met by the assassin, but the 3 wounds the elf got through were absorbed by wyrdstone + regen. He yielded 3CR when the siegebreaker fell on him ... The butcher mashed a few chicks with his shiny S5 club, and the 2 bulls in the front rank targeted the wounded death hag and pulped her. The witch hag couldn't cut through the blubber and the unit lost by 2, was out-numbered by fear-causers, broke and was caught with a speedy 11" ogre pursuit. The slave giant yelled at the xbows and broke them, again pursuing a healthy 11" and catching them. The ironguts faired less well, taking 4 wounds from their assassin (2 ogres worth with xbow wounds), fluffing the 3 return attaks and being carved by the shades.

Turn 2 - Softy Khainite Dark Elves

After much weighing of the odds, the spears w/ sorceress flanked the bull-star, while the other evil elves maneuvered for later turns. The sorceress miscast steal soul and lost a level and a wound. The cauldron put +1A on the flanking spears. In combat, the tyrant pulped the elf champion, but 8 S3 elf attaks turned into a dead bull (total regen flop) and the star needing a 3 to stay. A 4 was rerolled with fistful into a 10, and the star was run down.

Turn 3 - Tribe Farcrag

Ogres mobilize to mostly shoot things now and charge things later, with the giant cowering behing the large target hill. The magic phase brought the ogre miscast of the game, and my last butcher took a wound and stopped behing a wizard. His friends with guns felt his pain and opened up on the corsairs, the belchers killing 5 and the guneaters another 3. The hunter attempted his second snipe of the game, but the sorceress was pushed out of the way and 3 spear elves died instead.

Turn 3 - Softy Khainite Dark Elves

Corsairs charged the belchers, who fled. Shades mounted the hill, and would go on to kill the slave giant - I actually asked him to roll the assassin first, and his 2 shots took care of the beast. The spears got in the bulls' face, and the sorceress miscast again with doombolt, losing another level and her last wound.

Turn 4 - Tribe Farcrag
----------------------

Guneaters charge the corsairs, belchers fail to rally and will get one more chance, trappers take my hill, hunter stands on the central one (despite being too small to claim it), and the bulls conga line out of the way of the ironguts, while also baiting the spears with a rear charge that would expose their flank to the guts. No magic, no shooting, but lots of killing. The corsairs almost disappeared under the guneaters impacts + 15 attaks, but the last couple failed their insane courage and were caught.

Turn 4 - Softy Khainite Dark Elves
----------------------------------

Spears denied the bull charge, the cauldron was dragged clear of the woods and the assassin was on his way to cause mischief. The bound steed was easily dispelled, and the shades took potshots at the 2 bulls to no avail.

Turn 5 - Tribe Farcrag
----------------------

Belchers rallied and reloaded, but they and the guneaters were effectively out of the game. The guts charged the spears, and would trash the unit and run it down. The hunter took his third snipe: 3+ to hit the cauldron, 5+ to hit the crew, 5+ to randomize onto the death hag, 2+ to wound her, she failed her 4+ ward, and then took ... 1 wound on the D3. But still an amazing shot!

Turn 5 - Softy Khainite Dark Elves
----------------------------------

Cauldron climbed the hill and the assassin kept on running. The shades put some wounds on the 2 bulls.

Turn 6 - Tribe Farcrag
----------------------

The guts make the hill, claiming it for now with their hearty US12, the belchers try for another quarter but fall short, and the bulls contest the shades' corner and pester them from shooting the guts. The hunter makes his fourth snipe: 5+ to hit the assassin, 2+ to wound equals ... 1 wound on the D3!

Turn 6 - Softy Khainite Dark Elves
----------------------------------
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The assassin pulls off his run and joins the cauldron, bringing it to US5 and robbing me of +2 BP. The shades finish off a bull and keep their quarter.

Game ends major victory to the ogres, +1 BP each for our hills gave us 18 - 4 BP.

WAT

Dreadtasm! is a blog for battle reports of my warhammer fantasy exploits, most if not all of which are being documented with Battle Chronicler. There is a chance that other games may appear - I also play 40k, BFG and Mordheim - but fantasy remains where it's at for me. I currently play Warriors of Chaos, Skaven and Ogres (with some Beasts amassing in the closet) out of Albany, NY.

Dreadtasm! is unofficial and in no way endorsed by Games Workshop, though Warhammer and its associated names and images are indeed owned and trademarked by GW.
